New Site Launched!
This has been a long time coming, but I’m very glad to announce that OSRS Best in Slot 2.0 is now fully released, with almost every single aspect of the site receiving some much-needed improvements. I can’t detail each and every one of them but I’d like to mention a few of the big ones which I feel deserve some attention.
The New Design
My skills in the design department are limited at best, so I recruited some help from the popular Old School Runescape content creator – Joseph’s Place. The Joseph’s Place YouTube channel has a very unique, distinct and detailed art style and I knew that a similar style would work well for a full website design, which he so graciously agreed to do for me. The new design turned out great and we’re both very happy with it.
Best in Slot Tool Improvements
The Best in Slot Tool was the first and still is the most popular Old School Runescape tool on this site. Over the years I have improved it quite a bit, but some improvements which have been requested over-and-over I could never quite find the time to tackle. Thankfully I have managed to fit some major improvements into 2.0 and I’d like to detail a couple of them below:
Previous / Next toggles – previously it was only ever possible to ‘skip’ items. This would show you the next Best in Slot item in the list, useful if you did not have access to the item currently in the list. It had been requested multiple times to allow users to skip forward and backwards in the list. This has now been completed.
Item Names – previously the only way to see an item’s name in the tool was to click the ‘i’ for more information. This has been changed so that the item name shows when you hover over the item. You can also now click anywhere on the item to display the more information popup.
Free-to-play Items – a free-to-play toggle has been requested for so long and so many times that I started to lose count. The initial problem with this request was that I did not have a free / members field in my database for items, and it would have taken a very long time to add that information for each and every item in the database. Thankfully I found a solution to that, thanks to the amazing work of osrsbox. This brings me to my next point.
Data – manually maintaining my own database of gear and items for each and every item in the game was a very big (and very stupid) task to take on. Thankfully for me, there are smarter people out there who have taken it upon themselves to keep an up-to-date item database, which is automatically scraped and generated from community resources already available like the OSRS Wiki and the OSRS game files. For this reason, I’ve been able to discontinue my own database of items and I’m now entirely pulling data from osrsbox, the free and open-source database of Old School Runescape items. You can take a look at the project (and contribute) over on Github. This new data source applies to all of our OSRS Tools, not just the Best in Slot Calculator.
What does this new data source mean for the site and our Old School Runescape Tools? It means that the database of items we’re now pulling is much more complete and much more accurate. We went from using just over 1000 equipable and usable items on the site to now using over 20000! Now a big chunk of these 20000 items are of course not equipable, or not usable, or are simply duplicates, but there are tons of items in this new source of data that we were previously missing, mainly cosmetics and item variations like (t), (g) and so much more. This doesn’t mean much for the Best in Slot Tool but it does mean that our Gear Picker Tool just got some serious fashion-scape upgrades!
Boss Finder
Our new Boss Finder Tool is a fun addition which lets you filter down the 34 (and growing) bosses and challenges in Old School Runescape to find a boss to suit your needs. Whether you’re looking for a challenge with friends or a money-making venture for yourself the Old School Runescape Boss Finder Tool should help you find what you’re looking for.
Share A Screenshot
Another highly-requested and exciting feature I’ve been able to add is the new ‘Share a Screenshot’ button. The Gear Compare Tool and the Gear Picker Tool now have a new button which will generate a screenshot of your gear, hosted here on the site which you can then share with your friends. Perfect for helping friends gear up for bosses!
